For many years, we have been using Oxine®, a product made by Bio-Cide International in Oklahoma, after cleaning some HVAC ductwork for odor control and to kill some micro-organisms that might be remaining in the system. Earlier this month, Oxine® was added to the EPA’s “List N” of disinfectants for use against SARS-CoV-2, which is the virus which causes COVID-19.
Bio-Cide also makes a product called BioVex® which is so chemically similar to Oxine® that it is covered by the same EPA registration. Whereas Oxine® is designed for use in ductwork, BioVex® can be “fogged” into a space with predominantly hard, non-porous surfaces such as a kitchen or laundry room. Once the fogging is completed, the space can be re-occupied in about 30 minutes and no rinsing will be required as there is no residue of the product.
Considering their efficacy against viruses and bacteria, it is nice to be able to note that neither product is classified as hazardous under 29 CFR 1910.1200 (d) and neither is subject to GHS / SDS hazard statement requirements. Both are close to pH neutral and offer negligible toxicity and corrosiveness.
Either product requires that surfaces be cleaned before use.
