Service Technician

Airways Systems is currently accepting applications to join Airways for a career in our Service Department starting as a service technicians.

Service Technicians work as part of a crew under the leadership of a Team Leader to perform a wide variety of commercial and industrial cleaning jobs for Airways’ customers.

People who come to the Airways Systems Service Department have the opportunity for a long career doing work that is different every day at a business which offers benefits which you might expect to find at a larger company (see below).  Starting pay is $17.50 per hour with a $250 bonus for new hires who are still with us after 90 days and another $250 after six months.

Many of our foremen and technicians have been with us for over 10 years – and up to 30.  There are a lot of good reasons why they stay!  But this work isn’t for everyone.  Here’s what you might want to consider:

Airways could be a good fit for you if:

  • You want a good benefits package including health insurance, paid vacation and holidays, long term disability, and a retirement plan
  • You can get satisfaction from taking an ugly mess and leaving it clean
  • You don't mind heights, and in fact enjoy the view from ladders, lifts, and rooftops – but understand that heights require safety precautions
  • You don't mind being in tight spaces
  • You're a medium sized to smaller person
  • You're willing and able to work an irregular schedule with a mix of night and day work
  • You like the idea of doing a lot of different types of work
  • You like the idea of working in different types of settings – hospitals, apartment buildings, schools, factories, stadiums – all over the Chicagoland area
  • You're self-motivated to work even when no one is watching, and as you get more experience, to figure out what needs to be done without waiting to be told
  • You're comfortable being assigned to different team leaders from one project to the next
  • You're looking for a long-term career with a company in a very stable industry – not much risk of work being outsourced overseas

Airways is probably not for you if:

  • You don't care about benefit plans and are just focused on the hourly wage
  • You don't like to be in dirty, greasy areas, or you're not really driven to leave things really clean
  • You're afraid of heights, or not willing to wear fall-protection gear like harnesses when required
  • You get a little freaked out in tight spaces
  • You're a relatively big person
  • You need a regular, predictable schedule which doesn't change much from week to week
  • You want to get comfortable doing one thing every day
  • You are comfortable going to “your space” at the same place every day
  • You are more comfortable when you're told exactly what to do and how to do it, and you need a lot of supervision and structure
  • You want to have one permanent boss
  • You just want to get a job and aren't worried about whether it turns out to be a long-term career
